Background of PDM implementation

The PDM industry is driven by major initiatives focused on improving the competitive position of industrial organizations. Traditionally, companies have emphasized quality improvements, cost reduction, time-to-market, and increased productivity. Today, Enterprise PDM solutions span departmental, functional, and geographical boundaries to integrate and manage data and processes which typically are among the most sophisticated, creative, and fundamental to an organization's success, specifically those supporting innovation and design-to-manufacture of the company's core differentiated product or products. What's more, technology and globalization of demand and competition have created an environment where companies must now innovate and manage entire product systems consisting of highly specialized mechanical, electronic, and software components, and must do so in a coordinated fashion across numerous geographically dispersed design and manufacturing facilities. As you can see above picture in which PDM data structure is described,Contrary to conventional Engineering DB,all related datas stems from BOM structure itself.and searching and input is based on BOM structure which means engineering bom is one factor of most important information in product related data schema.
From overall view point of PDM implementation, first step is to accumalate basic data such as Parts,product structure, part specifications. and next step is engineering process based on basic data.

Definition of work process

 a certain work group and individual, with consistancy, Business. gathering together and  become  so-called Workflow. but we are more familiar with business process than with workflow.and workflow  represent company's own rule and way of doing job. which means something particular designed  systemtically,consistently for managing work task

 Business process or Process consist of the following components.

     Business Data ( documents,drawing, partlists )
     Individual work task ( each individual task )
     Decisions of many kinds
     Desired outcomes

 when data follow the process, it is affected by the business rule with changed added and modified and  work members can accept or reject the modified data. in other word, people who are in charge collect data physically and transfer it to others and then next person do with the data. and he or she makes a decision of which person has to do the job the problem of this manual process is following

    who own the data in certain time peroid ?
    control who is responsible for the data 
    in which place the data has to be placed 
    how the worker know who is the next worker at he or her transfering the data

as technology is getting more advanced, people is trying to find the solution for the problem.
Workflow Software is a tool or tool set for managing a way of doing job and organization for the better work efficiency. in other words, this software is capable of transfering certain data to a person in work group and controling access right. for example.Making work group people know who owns the data and where the data came from, where it have to be delivered and so on.

Workflow s/w enables people to know all related information and people don't have to worry about tasks relatively less important. instead enabling focus on critical task. these days, commercial workflow package have a capacity of modeling business process, defining task, condition for branch. and then complete whole process. monitoring on-going process. from the point of system implementation, workflow is kind of DB sets of the process. which means not coding but DB handling.
